The Spectre #1

The Spectre #1 - The Sinister Lives of Captain Skull! (**)

Silly, even for it's time.

There really isn't much suspense to a Spectre story. When you have a character that has any godlike power the creators can dream up, it's difficult to find a challenge for him. One common attempt was to throw another godlike spirit- entity at him. That's the case in this issue. Gardner Fox was always inventive, and here he takes us to some interesting time periods with neat historic details, but the overall story line just degenerates into two gods tossing godlike powers at each other page after page until one delivers a Deus ex Machina K.O. Unfortunately, stories like this were all too common in The Spectre's 60s revival.
